November Message from HOS
Love and thanks.
In my family, Thanksgiving is the most important of occasions. It was particularly meaningful for my parents. As a result, we have a lot of traditions, right down to cooking a turkey with special apple wood. Yet, most importantly, my parents passed down an understanding of how meaningful it is to pause, look inward, and acknowledge the many blessings in our lives, both big and small. Before we gather with loved ones during this season of reflection and gratitude, let’s take a moment to be grateful for GUS.
In the hustle and bustle of our daily routines, it can be easy to overlook the power of gratitude, but it is a key aspect of a strong mindfulness practice - an important component of a GUS education. When we take the time to acknowledge what we are thankful for, we shift our focus from challenges to possibilities. Gratitude not only enhances our emotional well-being and warms our hearts, but it also improves our ability to find our way during times of difficulty. No wonder we take time to be thankful ahead of the winter Solstice! Gratitude gives us strength, reminds us that we have all we need, and keeps us going, knowing the days will be lighter and brighter before we know it.
Last week our second graders shared a heart meditation at All School Meeting. With hands on our hearts, we sent love and warm thoughts to special people in our lives. The whole school and so many family members sending goodness into the world together was truly a beautiful way to start the day! I was once again filled with gratitude for our small but mighty school, the way we support each other, and the warmth of our community.
I am truly most thankful for all the ways we come together as a community. Whether it is gathering at All School Meeting, our round table discussions with parents (I am especially excited about the inbeTWEEN), or the many opportunities to cheer and celebrate our students, it is so clear that we are all connected by that special GUS magic. We certainly feel it at big events this time of year, like Grandfriends Day, Bread Day, and Solstice, but there is so much warmth and love in all the little things, too. Whether it's a kind word, a helping hand, or simply being present for one another, here at GUS, these simple acts of kindness enhance our community and leave me just overwhelmed with gratitude. I am continuously buoyed up and inspired by what a special place GUS is, made so by all the wonderful people-teachers, students and alumni, caregivers, parents, and friends. Thank you for all you each bring to GUS.
So let us all collectively take a minute to pause, to reflect on the blessings in our lives, and to send out love and kindness to our community. How lucky we all are to have found GUS and to be a part of something so uniquely wonderful. Happy (almost) Bread Day! May you find peace and strength in gratitude, and joy in this holiday season.
